What You Study Doesn’t Matter Anymore

We all study something we love in order to work in a job that is related to what we study. Well, that was in the past. Now, things have changed and what you study in college doesn’t matter anymore unless you study at Harvard or Oxford or MIT. But that is a good thing because not everybody gets their chance on what they study. Sometimes, things go different than you thought and you become successful in something else. But in our global world, this has changed. Now, you don’t have to be in luck to have this kind of chance.

Career change even in university is a reality for most people nowadays. We all somehow realize things either good or bad and career change is one of them. In university, you might have chosen business management but you want to work as a marketer or salesman or a business developer. This is possible and it is not because employers have changed. It is because the times have changed in favor of us. Now, we can reach a lot of information on the internet with just a couple of clicks and learn new things easily and quickly. Also, learning the job on the spot is easier because the jobs have become all digital and easier to do (for most of the jobs, not all of them.)

“Study without desire spoils the memory, and it retains nothing that it takes in.”
Leonardo da Vinci

So, why do we study university then? We can just learn a couple of things and move on with our careers without needing to go to a university. That’s not what I am talking about. Studying university is a time where you will not find anywhere or anytime again because you have a lot of time on your hands to improve yourself and get better on whatever you want to do after university. You can learn languages, learn new skills, work and save some money, and create your own business. That’s what university is for nowadays and it is the smartest investment a man can ever do. Don’t underestimate the power of the university in terms of getting better.

Even though we have a huge advantage like this while studying university, not most of us use this. People just go in, sits in the classroom, takes the exams, and leaves with their diploma and a GPA that no one cares about. If you have left that campus with a lot more knowledge on your career field or in another field, you would have more chances of finding a job or a job with a high wage. It’s all about you and what you can do for yourself. There is a lovely quote that I admire from Sherly Sandberg that talks about what I mean in just a couple of words;

We cannot change what we are not aware of, and once we are aware, we cannot help but change.

Sheryl Sandberg

Not most of us are aware of this opportunity that lies ahead of us. Once we see what it is, how it works, and how it can change our lives forever, it is not easy to forget about it and we start to change everything including ourselves for this.

I am studying international relations right now in university and what I do for a couple of companies is a whole different thing than what I study in the school. I study diplomacy, history of countries and continents, politics in the school whereas I have worked as a marketer and a business developer for a couple of companies. Normally, there is no chance for an international relations graduate to work as a marketer, it is really small but I have done it myself because I wanted to. I got some extra education from different companies on the internet where you can get a certificate for an education, I read a lot about these topics and got some experience as an intern, unpaid. That’s how I can do these jobs now.

You have to use the advantages of what is given by the internet and it is pretty easy, I gotta say. Without spending a dime, you can learn something in a matter of time and become knowledgeable to do the job and get a hands-on experience without failing too much. Another aspect of studying something and changing your career after graduation is that you won’t be jobless that easily because you know more than one or two professions and if one doesn’t payout, you can always go and work in another field without feeling the need of learning something. This is also another reason why you should focus on learning some other profession during your years at university.

Don’t be afraid, try. See the change, be the change and only then you will be able to see the world from a different of view that will lead you to win the game and get out of the rat race as Robert Kiyosaki states. Don’t be the traditionalist, one-way guy that makes you work in only one profession without too much promotion. Be the guy that can do more than one thing and use it to your advantage. Multi-task.
