Working At a Startup is Better
All of us has different dreams for our careers. Some of us want to work in top-notch companies like Google, Twitter, Facebook, etc. Some of us want to create their own business, and not much but some of us want to work in startups because corporate life isn’t just for them. Working in startups is something that a lot of people misjudge for. When you say startup, it sounds not stable, risky and dangerous and might go bankrupt any minute leaving you unemployed. Well, that is not the case for most of the startups anymore.
With evolving technology and internet, startups are not likely to go bankrupt anymore once they start to onboard people and create a team. Because everything is online nowadays especially because of the virus, costs have gone dramatically for small-medium startups and the work that most startups do is on the internet leaving them not creating anything, but rather giving services. Besides, the chances for a corporate to go down is as close as with a startup because of the pandemic. Corporate, especially in the service sector, rely heavily on massive transactions that are made every day and once this is gone, which is gone because of the pandemic, they start to have major problems and lay people off without a second thought. But in startups, since you are already a small team, it is not the case, it is different.
However, the reason why most people are afraid of working in startups is not mainly this reason, I can say. The reason behind it is because working in Google seems much better with all the benefits than working in a small startup that no one even heard of, plus, the wages, people think that they are way lower than corporate. Well, it might be true, but the difference is not that big. Google is not famous for its high wages but rather, because of its famous brand and also the benefits that it offers. However, with startups, you can easily go up the ladder much quicker than a corporate, thus, your wage increases significantly in a short amount of time if you put in the work. This is one of the unique features of startups; opportunity to go up the ladder without showing your work off because, in a small environment, your work is already spotted and seen way easier than a company with 1000+ employees.
Since it is a small team with startups and you don’t have to go through major red tape before you can present a new idea or a solution to a problem, it is way easier to be innovative in startups thanks to its small number of employees. This way, you can learn quicker, and much more than you can in a corporate, coming up with new ideas and presenting them and seeing the mistakes within your ideas directly from the CEO him/herself is a unique chance that teaches you a lot. This way, learning from your mistakes is not as painful as in a corporate because CEOs tend to support new ideas in startups because they are innovative as well and open to new ideas to strengthen the position of their startup.
When I was working in a startup, I was the event manager of two different countries which I helped them to get into the market in the first place, and I was just a newbie to the game when I did that. No one would be able to do this in a corporate. I learned to create something from scratch, run it and maintain my relationships with the partners that I found and every time I had a problem or a new idea that could help both the startup and the market we are in, I always went to our CEO who was massively experienced in the sector. This is something that you can NEVER get when you are working in a corporate.
Okay, this might seem like this is a lie but it isn’t. When we are talking about startups, there are thousands of people who are interested to learn more about this, doesn’t matter if they own a startup or investing in startups, even though they are heavily experienced, this doesn’t change the fact that they are always trying to find or learn something new in the sector. If you are working in a startup, this means that generally, you are in connection with other startups for partnership, idea exchange or some kind of an event all the time. This makes you meet a lot of people and maintain those relationships even creating a huge network. When you are in a corporate, it is just a 9–5 where you go to work and go home. Events or partnering with startups/corporate is not too much, if you are not a manager you probably don’t do any of these, so you just stick with your colleagues who can’t help you when you lose your job or seeking something new.
This is why startups offer much more in nearly every aspect of the business world than a corporate. Networking, unique ideas, developing, learning, and many more. Yes, the disadvantages are way more than corporate but everything has its risks, so you have to learn to live with those risk and adapt to them. It’s your choice, your life.
